How big is a hectare?

1 hectare equal 10,000 square metres (0.01 km²) — about 1.4 football fields or 2.47 acres. But a figure like that is hard to picture: drag the map above to your city or a place you know to see this hectare drawn at real scale.

To picture it, 1 hectare cover roughly the same as:

  • a rugby pitch including its in-goal areas (~1 ha)
  • London's Trafalgar Square (~1.2 ha)
  • a city block in Barcelona's Eixample (~1.2 ha)

Drag the map to your city and change the number of hectares to compare other areas instantly.
