How heavy is 1,000 kilos?

"Heavier than a ton of bricks"… but how much does a ton of anything actually weigh? We hear weights all the time — "the truck carried 20 tonnes", "the stranded whale weighed 80,000 kilos", "the satellite weighs half a tonne" — and our brains are bad at picturing them. The tool above draws whatever weight you type using icons: each icon is something you already know (an egg, a person, a cow, a car, an elephant), so the figure becomes something you can count at a glance. Below it, a human equivalence: the combined weight of everyone in a whole city.

The weight ladder: from an egg to the Eiffel Tower

The tool picks the right reference for each weight by itself (and you can change it with the "Show" selector). These are the rungs:

Frequently asked questions about weights

How much does an elephant weigh?
An adult African elephant weighs around 6,000 kilos (about 13,000 pounds); an Asian elephant, around 4,000. Females weigh considerably less than males.
How much does a blue whale weigh?
An adult blue whale weighs about 150,000 kilos (330,000 pounds), with the largest specimens approaching 180,000. It is the largest animal that has ever existed: its tongue alone weighs as much as an elephant.
How much does the Eiffel Tower weigh?
The Eiffel Tower weighs about 10,100 tonnes in total, of which 7,300 are the iron structure.
How many pounds are in a kilo?
One kilogram is 2.2046 pounds. The other way around, a pound is 0.4536 kilos.
How much is a ton, really?
A metric tonne is exactly 1,000 kilos (2,204.6 pounds). The US short ton is 2,000 pounds, about 907 kilos. So the proverbial ton of bricks weighs roughly as heavy as 13 people together.
