How much is a million dollars?
Type an amount of money and see it in working time (days on the minimum wage, years of average wage, whole working lives) and in things you know: cars, homes, lottery jackpots or city budgets.
“A million dollars”, “a $1.6 billion relief package”, “the national debt tops $37 trillion”… Money figures are the most abstract of all: past a certain size, they all sound equally huge. The tool above translates them into two things we can actually measure: the time it takes to earn them and what they can buy.
The headline sums it up: a million dollars is about 14 years of average wage, or 20 new cars. Below it, the bar sets the amount against a 40-year working life and, when one life is not enough, against history: $100 million would mean starting work in the early Middle Ages. Both icon drawings have their own “Show” selector.
Three ways to measure money
In working time. The most honest measure, because money is, in the end, someone’s time. The ladder runs from a day on the minimum wage to a year of the whole country’s wages:
| Reference | Dollars |
|---|---|
| ⏱️ A day on the federal minimum wage | 58 |
| 📅 A full-time month on the minimum wage | 1,256.67 |
| 💼 A year of average wage (BLS) | 69,770 |
| ⏳ A working life: 40 years of average wage | 2.79 million |
| 🏢 A year of payroll for 1,000 employees | 69.8 million |
| 🏭 A day of wages for the whole US | 31.2 billion |
| 🗺️ A year of wages for the whole US | 11.4 trillion |
In things. What the amount buys, from a lottery ticket to a year of GDP:
| Reference | Dollars |
|---|---|
| 🎫 A Powerball ticket | 2 |
| 🔑 A month of typical rent | 1,895 |
| 🚗 A new car | 50,089 |
| 🏠 A home (median existing-home price) | 429,100 |
| 🎰 The record Powerball jackpot | 2.04 billion |
| 🏛️ New York City’s yearly budget | 125.84 billion |
| 👵 A year of Social Security | 1.61 trillion |
| 🌐 US GDP in a year | 30.9 trillion |
Per person. For public figures the tool also divides by the 341.8 million people in the United States: $1 billion is about $2.93 each.
In euros? Pick “euros” in the selector: the tool does not apply an exchange rate, it switches country and uses Spain’s wages and prices (minimum wage, average wage, homes, Madrid’s city budget…).

Frequently asked questions about money
- How long does it take to earn a million dollars?
- On the average US wage ($69,770 a year, BLS) and spending nothing, about 14 years. On the federal minimum wage ($15,080 a year full time) it would take 66 years, longer than a whole working life.
- How much is a billion and a trillion?
- A billion is a thousand millions (1,000,000,000) and a trillion is a million millions (1,000,000,000,000). Careful with Spanish and most of Europe: there a billón is a million millions, the English trillion. More in how much is a billion?
- What is the US federal minimum wage?
- The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, unchanged since July 2009: $58 for an 8-hour day and $15,080 for a full-time year. Many states and cities set a higher one.
- What is the average salary in the United States?
- The mean annual wage across all occupations was $69,770 in May 2025 (BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics). The median is lower: full-time workers earned a median $1,258 a week in mid-2026, about $65,400 a year.
- Why does the tool not convert dollars to euros?
- Because a dollar does not stretch the same in New York as in Madrid. Instead of applying an exchange rate, each currency uses the wages and prices of its own country: dollars with US data and euros with Spanish data.
